Abstract

In terms of origin, the languages of Southeast Asia can be divided into two categories indigenous and non-indigenous. Indigenous languages are those which have been in the area for a long time, as compared to the non-indigenous ones which have the origins outside such as Chinese, Indian and European languages. A widely accepted theory, that of H. Kem, posits the original homeland of the Austronesian languages of Peninsular Malaysia and the islands of Southeast Asia as the Province of Yunnan in Southeast China.
